Thank you resident - Ranjan sir, for sharing such an important news article)
The article discusses a 34-year study conducted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) that found air pollution is turning rainfall more acidic in several cities across India.
The study analyzed rainfall data from 1986 to 2019 and found that the pH level of rainfall has decreased over the years, indicating increased acidity.
This is attributed to the rising levels of air pollutants, particularly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which get dissolved in the rainwater. The acidic rainfall can have adverse effects on the environment, agriculture, and human health.
However, acid rain is not considered as an urgent threat.
